Mercedes-benz SL350
RRP $220,000 (estimated).

Why we're driving it Mercedes has just unveiled the updated model in the US ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms later this year.

Likes The SL350 gets a new, more powerful V6 and the seven-speed auto gets sports shift. The steering and suspension have been overhauled to provide a more sporting drive and better grip. It finally gets the air scarf (it blows hot air on your neck on cool nights), an option on the cheaper SLK convertible for two years now.

Dislikes The styling is more aggressive but it's still growing on me. Not sure about the headlights. It looks like a facelift that's been pulled too tight. At a glance from behind, you can't pick it as the new model.

Would I buy one? Not that I've got the luxury of the choice but if I did, yes. I'll reserve final judgment until driving it on local roads but early signs are good. Joshua Dowling

Audi A3 1.8T three-door hatch
RRP $42,000.

As tested $46,200 (extras: metallic paint $1300, leather upholstery $2900).

Why we're driving it Audi recently added the 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder to the A3 range. The new engine will also be in the coming A3 convertible.

Likes The new engine has strong power delivery and is mated to a precise six-speed manual gearbox. Sure-footed handling, good standard safety equipment. Sports suspension is firm but not uncomfortable. Quality materials throughout the cabin.

Dislikes The power causes the steering wheel to tug under hard acceleration. Leather and rear parking sensors are optional.

Would I buy one? No. I love the styling and quality feel of the A3 and the 1.8T engine is a cracker - but if you want a small performance-style hatch you can get the five-door 2.0-litre Golf GTI for almost $4000 less, or the Golf GT Sport for $8710 less. Jaedene Hudson

Market Report Friday July 25 - PM
A bloody end to the week - the biggest one-day fall in six months - as the market seems to over-react to NAB's announcement of extra provisioning.
